Taurus: Giving
Form to Spring
by Ted PanDeva Zagar
Note: The author uses Sol and Luna instead
of generic terms like "sun" and "moon" when referring to the
two most important spheres in our solar system. Folk remedies, herbs, foods,
micronutrients, and other substances and therapies are included as information
and not as replacements for the diagnoses, advice, and treatments provided by
competent wellness professionals.
TAURUS
The torrent of energy unleashed by the fire
sign Aries slows to a snail's pace as it is captured and given form by Taurus.
Governed by Venus, the slowest spinner among planets (one Venusian day/night
cycle = 243 Earth days), Taurus is appropriately symbolized by the unhurried,
easy-going Bull. Because among the solar system's spheres Venus is the most
spherical, and because its path around Sol (Sun) is more circular than
elliptical, this whitish orb governs harmony and music, balance and peace.
Through the earth sign of Taurus, Venus reigns over physical, sensual love, and
also over creature comforts and sense pleasures. As such, Taurus relates to the
economy. This is the season during which monetary empires rise and fall, and on
a more personal level, where debts large and small are made or paid.
On a higher level, Taurus/Venus governs the
phenomenal world: "Mother" nature. Celebrations abound honoring the
living world and its resources which provide us with the necessities of life. No
small number of environmentalists, or the vitally important movements which they
launch, are born of Taurus.
Siddhartha, the historical Buddha ("enlightened
one"), was one of Taurus's most notable offspring. True to the idealistic
end of the spectrum governed by his sign, Siddhartha eschewed both personal
possessions and the material comforts which they provide. His path -- so
reflective of Venus -- led to a stilling, a calming, an anchoring of the self
within the Self. In the state where the anima is suspended, where motion and
time and space cease to be, there one shall find Truth.
The Bull governs the throat, tonsils, thyroid
gland, neck, and cervical vertebrae. It is through our Venus-ruled throat that
we harmonize with the songs of nature around us. And it is through the thyroid
gland that we effect a balance in our physical mass. The iodine in our food is
directed to this organ for the production of thyroxin, a weight-regulating
hormone. Too much or too little of this trace mineral can result in being
underweight or overweight.
Taurus is the month when we shall come to know the
benefits of the herb sage (sore throat), the essential oil of lavender (gargled
for sore throat and laryngitis), and iodine-rich foods like kelp, Swiss chard,
and cucumber.
*****
Spring is act one in the grand drama that
celebrates the annual passage of Sol through the 12 signs of the zodiac. It is
that season of the year when we learn the merits of initiation (Aries),
consolidation (Taurus), and diversification (Gemini). May you find wellness of
body, mind, and spirit this spring season!
