  DAILY GUIDES REVIEW:

Daily Guides

Reviewed by Marie T. Russell

What's a day book or a daily guide? Basically they offer an inspirational thought or message for the day. Usually read in the morning, they can also be used to bolster our spirits or thoughts throughout the day. At times when I've neglected to read mine in the morning, upon reading it at night, I will find that the message definitely applied to the day I went through... While hindsight is always great, I find I prefer to read my daily message in the morning... and then reread it at night so I can reflect on how it manifested in my day, and the lessons I learned (or did not learn, according to the situation).

Here are the daily guides that are my favorites. At the end of the review, you will also find a link to more daily guides, so you can browse through and see if any call to you specifically. Some offer longer readings and others just short quotes. I tend to keep one in the bathroom (yes... where else are we guaranteed quiet time?) and I also keep a daybook on my desk. That way, I can reread the daily message while being on hold, or when I've just gone through a " challenging moment" in which I feel I need moral support.

The "daybooks" are divided into three categories:

1) Daily: A message for each day of the year. These are geared to each specific date, i.e. January 1st, 2nd, 3rd, etc..

2) Some that have no date, just 365 messages. These messages can be read in order, or the book opened randomly after a short centering or meditation. Either way "works".

3) Books for one month by day, and others per week. These focus on a repeated reading with one message for the week, or a rereading of the messages for each day of the month in the subsequent months. The repeated reading helps the messages "ingrain" themselves in our subconscious.

Daily books
(dated from January 1st - December 31st)

Meditations for Living in Balance
by Anne Wilson. Schaef, Ph.D

Anne Wilson Schaef, well-known author of Meditations For Women Who Do Too Much, has put together a great daily guide. Each page, or day, has three parts. The first is a quotation; the second part is a short article (a few paragraphs) focusing the topic brought up by the quotation; the third part gives a bit of advice or a "to do" for the day. For example, "The next time you feel a bit crazy, honor the feeling and be open to the possibility that feeling crazy might be a normal response in that situation." A wonderful daily guide! Small enough to fit in a pocket, or purse, or take up just a tiny bit of space on a desk.

Angel Wisdom
by Terry Lynn Taylor, Mary Beth Crain

Another great daily guide. This one features a word or few word theme for the day. For example: Human Family, Rejuvenation, Wholeness, etc. Each theme has an Angel Reminder, an explanation, and an Angelic Reflection (affirmation for the day). Many of the pages have "pencil drawings" of angels or cherubs adding charm to the pages. Slightly bigger than the previous book, but still small enough to keep in your purse or desktop.

Opening to Love 365 Days a Year
by Judith Sherven, Ph.D. and James Sniechowski Ph.D.

A great book for anyone in relationship or someone looking for the "right" one. It can open up avenues of conversation and insights about sharing your life with someone you love. It features an affirmation, a quote, and a short "article" for each day's focus. While this book is not a "fit in your pocket" size, its content is great reading, with your mate, before bedtime. It gives great ideas on how to enhance understanding, communication, and love -- both for self and for your mate.

Daily Imperfections
by Enid Howarth, Jan Tras

OK. So you don't have much extra time, and all these other books just have too much reading... Daily Imperfections sounds like what you need. Just a daily quote with a line or two of explanation and a thing to do for the day. Simple. Short. Sweet. An example: Bore No More. "Never fear being vulgar, just boring." ~Diana Vreeland -- accompanied by a two line explanation, and the "to do": "Today I will practice being fearless and just a little bit vulgar." Great book with a sense of humor helping us to accept ourselves with our daily imperfections.

365 Health and Happiness Boosters
by M. J. Ryan

Great book! Give something to do each day to boost our happiness level. An example: "Just for today, before making any decision, big or small, ask yourself: 'Will this make me happy?' If the answer is yes, do it. If not, don't. At the end of the day, notive how you feel and how your day was different." Highly recommended!

365 Ways to Relax Mind, Body & Soul
by Barbara L. Heller

A great little book. Carry it with you to read another page whenever you have a spare minute. It's packed with ideas of how to relax. Some are things to do instantly, others things to put into practice... but all are great ideas for anyone. A great gift!

Secrets of Comfort and Joy
by J. Donald Walters

Too busy for any of this "stuff"? This book is then perfect for you! Small, actually tiny... you can carry it with you in your pocket to pull out anytime you have a minute... in the elevator, at a red light, while on hold... Each message can be read in less than 10 seconds! (Believe me, I timed them!) Then, of course, you may want to take a couple of extra seconds to reflect on them, but these are great, short, inspirational, and powerful. The book holds 31 inspirational messages, one for each day of the month...

ALSO: Secrets of Love
by J. Donald Walters.

Same principle as the above, but with a focus on love and relationships. Provides a daily focus, or teaching. A small book, but a great helper in creating a sound basis for a loving relationship.

Pleasant Dreams
by Amy E. Dean

A cuddly book! Yes, it's perfect to take to bed... the cover is slightly padded, making it feel soft like a cloud... OK, I know that's not the important part of the book, but it just makes it more pleasant to handle. This book is divided into 52 weeks, and each week has an affirmation and a small story or article to go with it. Provides a focus or theme for your week and your nightly rest. My recommendation is to read the article and affirmation in the evening (way before bedtime so you can reflect on it), and then reread the affirmation each morning to help plant it into your daily reality.

The Royal Road to Abundant Living
by Norah Boyd and Neil Mence

This book basically provides us with a month-long course for abundant living -- a guide to help us increase our levels of health, happiness, and prosperity. The daily readings are longer than the usual daily guides, but again this book should be viewed as a course or class, not just as a short inspirational text. Each day's presentation starts with a question, the answer, and a related meditation -- each day being 3 or 4 pages of reading material. A great book to help you advance on your spiritual path of empowerment. Many of the teachings come from the Science of Mind as Norah Boyd is a minsiter/teacher of Religious Science in England.
