The dried fruit of berberis vulgaris, commonly known as Barberry, is used as a herbal medicine. The active ingredients in barberries are the isoquinolone alkaloids, especially berberin.
The berries are edible and rich in vitamin C. They have a very sharp flavour. They do have thorns and this makes harvesting them difficult. They are also an important food source for many small birds

Berbamine, berberine, berberrubine, columbamine, hydrastine, jatrorrhizine, manganese, oxycanthine, palmatine, vitamin C.
Reduces heart rate, breathing, bronchial constriction. Do not use if pregnant. Promotes intestinal movement. Kills bacteria on skin.
