The Miracle That Is Our Life... If We Let It!

As we get used to just being ourselves and being present, the path of our life widens and progresses. It's not that we don't handle the responsibilities of our lives; it's just that we do so wide awake, allowing things to happen rather than forcing them. The process by which this occurs involves becoming more honest with our feelings and the details of our inner experience while at the same time using the external world for a reality check.

I will give you some examples. A few years ago, I was going through a very difficult period, and needed a break for my own healing and sanity. I decided that I would go up to the northern coast to Mendocino and get a room for several days by the ocean. I knew that it was a holiday weekend and all the rooms would likely be reserved. But when I tuned in, I got very specific guidance that if I listened carefully, I could trust things to work out. So, partly out of trust and partly out of curiosity, I headed north for the two-and-a-half-hour drive.

No Room at the Inn?

As I entered the town of Mendocino, I began to get very specific feelings about how fast to go and which way to turn. I was directed to go specifically to a lovely inn overlooking the ocean. I went inside and inquired about a room.

"I'm sorry, but we're all full; it's a holiday, you know. Most of these rooms have been booked for months."

My inner guidance told me not to worry. I drove slowly around town for about ten minutes until I got a strong feeling that I should go back to that same inn. I parked and went inside, and just as I reached the reception desk, the phone rang. As you may have already guessed, it was someone canceling a reservation.

By following and trusting my inner guidance, I ended up with a lovely room where I could collect myself again, although the process I had just followed had created a very interesting beginning and reminded me how I needed to proceed to find balance in my life again.

Experimenting with an Interactive Living Universe

When we begin to experiment and live from this idea of an interactive living universe, very surprising things can happen. It is deeply reassuring to know that we are never alone and never unsupported.

I went to Mali with my dear friend Christine. On the way home we wanted to stop in Morocco for a few days, and I decided to try an experiment. Eight years before I had met a Moroccan Sufi teacher, Sidi Ahmed Costas, while he was visiting United States. I had lost all of his contact information and only knew that he lived somewhere in Morocco. I suggested that we let the universe lead us to him, and Christine readily agreed.

My plan was that after we landed in the airport in Marrakech, we would go to the train station, which was adjacent to it, and walk around until someone came up to us and suggested a place where we should go. After about fifteen minutes, a smiling local teenage boy came up to us and asked if we were Americans. We replied that we were.

"Have you ever been to Fez?" he asked with great enthusiasm.

"No, but we're about to buy tickets for there right now," we answered, smiling to each other.

Board It and They Will Come!

The Miracle That Is Our Life...If We Let It!We bought the tickets, and after a short wait, boarded the train. We did not have to wait long for what happened next. At the first stop, a well-dressed Moroccan gentleman entered the compartment and sat down in the corner across from us by the window. He was reading a book written in English, Buddha in the Suburbs, and I thought to myself, "I must speak with this person." We were soon engaged in conversation, and I asked the man if he had heard of Sidi Ahmed Costas.

"Yes," he replied, surprised. "He's a good friend of mine, but I haven't seen him in several years and am not sure how to reach him. I do know that he still lives in Fez, though."

Christine and I looked at each other. We were both pretty amazed that we had found not only the right train and the right car but the right person to lead us to my friend. We had found the city were Costas lived, and we were on our way there. Christine and I wondered what would come next. Again, we did not have to wait long.

We're Off to See the Wizard

At the very next stop, a young woman entered our compartment and sat down next to me. Shortly after the train started to move again, she began conversing in French with the gentleman across from us. After about ten minutes, he looked up and said,

"She knows Costas! He is her advisor at the university!"

By that evening, we had my friend's phone number and email address. He joined us for dinner the next evening, though as a Sufi and a mystic, he was not at all surprised at how we had found him.

Living Life with Trust & Connection

This book and several others could be filled with stories like this. Long ago I decided to live my life in this way, trusting and communicating my needs to a bigger reality and most importantly, being open to it.

We are all connected in this way and we all have these experiences. Most of the time, though, we doubt, ignore, or simply don't notice them. We are used to saying, "Oh, this worked out well," or "I just got a great idea." But from the perspective I'm talking about does it really matter whether the idea came from my brain, my intuition, or the sacred/quantum universe? Are these sources really any different?
