From Huntsman to Bachman to an already imploded Santorum (remember his PA senatorial reelection fiasco), and Gingrich's Tiffany moment the previous implosions were expected as these candidates were a bit eccentric to begin with. Now it appears that Ron Paul may be the only reasonable (?) one standing in Romney's path to the GOP nomination as the once more-reasonable Perry and the once likeable upstart Cain implode. Don't expect much from Ron Paul as he has yet to figure out how not to twist into an intellectual pretzel while trying to explain his libertarian philosophy.

At best what has happened these last few days is painful to watch.

While some have wondered if Rick Perry was drunk, looking objectively at his past appearances and comparing them to this recent one, there is no doubt that this is a completely "new" or at least very different Rick Perry. Gone are the stately and Reagan-like charisma. Instead one sees more of a goofy Gomer Pyle type of presence. If he was trying to come across as the guy sitting next to you on your couch watching the football game, then he succeeded. If he is trying to emulate Cain's casual friendly attitude, it was not successful. If he was hoping to come off as presidential then perhaps not so successful either. However, maybe the goal was to emulate George W. Bush who did win the presidency while often showing less-than presidential behavior and rhetoric.

One must wonder if perhaps Governor Perry was under some very strong pain medication which affected his behavior to the point of appearing dopey. We will just have to wait and see if this new persona is here to stay, or if this was just a "senior moment".

Now that Cain is dropping in the polls and it is too late for others to get in the anybody but Romney race, I guess it's time for round 2. Looks like Newt Gingrich is up first for a resurgence.

Gingrich moving up in polls

In John King's interview with Republican Presidential candidate Newt Gingrich, the former House speaker says his campaign offers substance and bold ideas that are attracting new support.

When it seems that Ron Paul and Rick Santorum are the steadiest contenders to Romney for the GOP nomination, one is tempted to wince. Add to that the fact that, at present, there is no Democratic challengers, then the 99%ers are the only ones likely to push the Democratic side in a direction. It is the electoric that is the big loser, for in a "true" democratic society it is the existence of the loyal opposition that keeps the government honest. And that has been truly lacking in our society as of late.
