GEMINI NEW MOON: This week draws a powerful eclipse season to a close and begins a new lunar cycle. After a very intense several weeks, the Sun and Moon open the windows to let in some fresh air. They will conjoin in Gemini, the sign of The Twins, on Monday, May 30, at 4:30 a.m. PDT.
When the two lights meet at 09°03´ Gemini, they will also be closely aligned with the fixed star Aldebaran. This giant orange star was one of the four Royal Stars, or Guardians of the Sky, in ancient Persia, and is associated with Archangel Michael.
According to astrologer Roderick Kidston, in his book The Magic of the Stars, Aldebaran "is a star of great power and can bestow great gifts." However, it can also bring downfall, "if your ambition outweighs your ethics." When we work with Aldebaran's influence, we must "be very self-aware and scrupulous"; if we use its energy with integrity, we can "do truly great things, reaching a wide audience in a dazzling way. Right intention and right action are all important with this star."
MERCURY RETROGRADE: Mercury is the planetary ruler of Gemini, and thus is also the ruler of the new lunar cycle that begins on Monday. This means we can look to the Messenger Planet for additional information regarding the next four weeks.
Although Mercury goes direct on Friday this week, it is retrograde at the time of the lunation. This draws us inward for a process of review rather than encouraging the implementation of new plans at this time.
Mercury is also involved in some complex relationships in the New Moon chart, being in very close aspect to three slower-moving planets: Saturn, Neptune, and Pluto. Mercury's square to Saturn indicates some obstacles or delays in communications or planning, perhaps due to a stubborn unwillingness to consider alternate perspectives. Frustration and even minor depression are possible if we continue to see reality from only an old, limited perspective. This aspect is especially strong with both Mercury and Saturn virtually at a standstill this week.
On the positive side, with Mercury sextile Neptune, intuitive insights and the creative imagination are enhanced throughout the new lunar cycle, and we are more able to convey compassion through our words. The Mercury-Pluto trine suggests that over the next four weeks, we will have opportunities to dive more deeply into areas of interest, especially metaphysics or other topics that delve into the mysteries of life. This trine also helps us sense what is going on beneath the surface, to know motivations and truths that are unspoken.
SATURN RETROGRADE: Saturn will station retrograde on Saturday, June 4, when the Ringed Planet is at 25°15´ Aquarius. If you have planets or points in your natal chart between 23 and 27 degrees of fixed signs (Taurus, Leo, Scorpio, or Aquarius), you may be experiencing a strong "reality check" right now, designed to help you see clearly what is and isn't working, so that you can make new choices that will better contribute to your ultimate success. This need to objectively assess conditions is true for all of us in some area of life, based on the house placement of those degrees of Aquarius in our natal charts.
Saturn's retrograde phase will last until October 22, when it stations direct at 18°35´ Aquarius. Over these next five months, we are being asked to wrap up any unfinished business, issues that could stand in the way of achieving our goals if they are not addressed. Since Saturn is Father Time, it can be helpful to know that any delays that occur during this time may literally be due to a need for better timing.
In his book Dynamics of Aspect Analysis, astrologer Bil Tierney writes that during Saturn's retrograde period:
"a proper timing system is taking place, and we will actually succeed with our interests best in the long run when we now accept our present duties with more patience, endurance, and inner steadiness of attention. While we still should continuously work at manifesting our current objectives rather than giving up, we should not push for immediate results or demand satisfaction. Saturn is teaching us to slow down, apply the brakes on our ego, and become more organized."
DAILY ASPECTS: Here is the (very short!) list of the important planetary aspects that are occurring this week, along with my brief interpretations:
Monday
New Moon 4:30 a.m. PDT: During this new lunar cycle, we have an opportunity to delve more deeply into the unknowns of life, to reach a better conscious understanding of how this physical reality works.

Friday
Mercury stations direct: We are now completing a three-week process of review that began when Mercury went retrograde on May 10. As Mercury gradually builds up speed over the next couple of weeks, we can begin to focus our attention outward, to see what new opportunities and ideas we wish to take advantage of going forward.
Sun sesquiquadrate Pluto: Others may be very resistant to our ideas, especially if we are using fear tactics or other manipulations to promote a personal agenda.
Saturday
Saturn stations retrograde: The next five months are a good time to reassess our goals and ambitions, and to do the behind-the-scenes work that will then support our success after Saturn goes direct at the end of October.
Sunday
No major aspects are exact today.
