When your hands, your mind,
and your heart are completely open,
this is when magic begins to happen.
Drop all presumptions and be open to miracles.

                                                         -- The Life Navigator Deck

While we may have been taught that miracles are few and far between, and not only that, but only "special" people can perform miracles, this is far from the truth. The first thing to realize is that life itself is a miracle. After all, a teeny tiny sperm and egg combine to create a complex human being with an immune system, digestive system, a heart and lungs that do their job without our having to do anything to make that happen, etc. We are a miracle.

A plant that comes forth from a seed is a miracle. A tree from an acorn. A multitude of fruit from a single tree, and an abundance of seeds from a single fruit. A butterfly from a caterpillar, a chicken from an egg, and so much more.

Miracles are taking place around us continuously. The power of our mind is also a miracle. A lot of of the barriers to our seeing and experiencing miracles are in our beliefs - not only the ones we have in place but the ones we don't have. The great master teacher Jesus is quoted as saying: "For truly, I say to you, if you have faith like a grain of mustard seed, you will say to this mountain, 'Move from here to there,' and it will move, and nothing will be impossible for you." Mark 11:23-24

Now how's that for a miracle? And the most important thing that is needed is the belief that is it possible (faith). Whatever we wish to have happen in our own life or in the world, the first step is to have faith... in ourselves, in others, in the Universe... or maybe just have faith in faith itself. As Wayne Dyer famously wrote: "You'll see it when you believe it."

So for us to create "a better life", we must have faith that it is possible. Actually, more than possible, but probable. And even better yet if we can have complete faith that it will come to pass. This reminds me of another statement from the Bible: “I believe; help my unbelief” in Mark 9:24.

Believing is an inside job, and it is also an ongoing one. To have miracles (wonderful events) manifest in our life, we must work on our willingness to believe that they are possible, no matter what the circumstances around us may point to. It's not always easy but it requires persistence and the willingness to believe that not only can it happen, but that it will happen. It is important to be open to miracles.

Addendum:

The day after I wrote this article, I came across the following quote. It is a wonderful overview of the concept of faith (believing with our hearts) and miracles (referred to as magic in the book):

"Faith holds the real magic in life. What we believe with our hearts can come true. Faith can break unbreakable laws. It can change everything. It can defy every single odd. However, this isn't a magic most can master or use because it takes real discipline. It requires you to believe in that which doesn't yet exist. That's not something that most can do, because they will look like fools if they fail. But the person who believes whole-heartedly in their dreams is the most courageous. Their power is truly unstoppable. When you believe in yourself and your dreams, you are a mysterious creature who few will understand and no one will be able to conquer." -- The Triumphant Daughter (Book 4 of 12: Unstoppable Liv Beaufont) written by Sarah Noffke and Michael Anderle.
