AS WE BEGIN the first week of the month of Cancer, the solstice gateway is just a few steps behind us, and we are riding a new impulse of energy. Just ahead of us is a sacred time of year, a period of several weeks when the fixed star Sirius is in close longitudinal proximity to our Sun.

Sirius is the brightest star in Earth's sky. But each year, from late June to mid August, when Sirius rises in the sky at the same time as our Sun, its light seems to be hidden from our view. In actuality, during these weeks, the energy of Sirius is fused with and focused by the Sun's rays.

ESOTERIC ASTROLOGY tells us that Sirius is “the heart of our physical Sun” and the Earth’s spiritual Sun. The star emanates the Second Ray, one of the seven rainbow rays that are broadcast to our solar system from the cosmos. The Second Ray works with the heart chakra and thymus gland (high heart chakra) and carries with it the qualities of Love and Wisdom.

As seen from Earth, Sirius is currently at 14°22´ Cancer. In 2021, it rises with the Sun between June 25 and August 11, with their precise alignment on or about July 6, depending on where we are located on the globe. During these weeks that the energies of Sirius comingle with those of our Sun, we are encouraged to meditate upon the qualities of the Second Ray, and to invoke those heart-expanding energies for ourselves and for all of humanity.

RETURNING to activity in our more local planetary system, the spotlight is on Venus this week. When active, the goddess of Love directs our attention to the areas of human experience that are "ruled" by the planet: relationships, values, the arts, and finances.

We have a bit of a rollercoaster ride in store this week, based on the variety of aspects involving Venus. The week starts off gently, with Venus in Cancer trine Neptune in Pisces on Monday. This is a romantic and creative influence. It helps us see the best in others and can inspire the creative imagination to reach new heights.

TUESDAY AND WEDNESDAY tell a very different tale. On these two days, Venus is square Eris and opposing Pluto. With these hard aspects, feelings of vulnerability are heightened, especially if we are dealing with another person's anger or dominance. Trust issues and secrets are revealed, and we clearly see how manipulation and power struggles have played a role in current difficulties.

We may remain in "fight or flight" mode for the rest of the week, either withdrawn or constantly on alert for danger, until Venus enters fiery Leo at 9:26 p.m. PDT on Saturday, June 26. At that time, Venus becomes more emboldened and even dramatic in expressing her needs.

Venus will transit the sign of Leo from June 26 to July 21. During this time, we may be inspired to take action, if needed, to ensure greater personal fulfillment going forward. Since Leo rules the heart, we may be powerfully drawn to follow our heart's desire, even if it involves taking some risks.

OUR FULL MOON this week is especially significant because it is the climax of the lunar cycle that began with a Solar Eclipse. The beginnings that we anticipated with that Gemini eclipse on June 10 may have been delayed or sidetracked for a short time, due to Mercury being retrograde. But, Mercury stations direct this Tuesday, June 22 (2:59 p.m. PDT). This shift supports clearer thinking and more direct communication going forward, based on our having released old belief patterns that had been undermining our progress.

We will be in Mercury's post-retrograde "shadow period" until July 7; while we may want to use these next two weeks to fine-tune our plans before taking concrete action, we can still count on more mental clarity than we may have been experiencing recently.

THAT BEING SAID, Neptune's energy is very strong this week, since the planet will station retrograde on Friday. As a transpersonal planet, one of Neptune's tasks is to help us transcend this physical reality, to find sustenance in spiritual or creative pursuits that help us rise above the dramas of "real life." As such, when Neptune's influence is heightened, our capacity for faith and surrender is stronger, but we can also tend to be a bit ungrounded and less able to focus on practical matters.

Emphasizing this more challenging side of Neptune's effects, Mars forms a hard sesquiquadrate aspect with stationary Neptune on Thursday. While Mars in Leo might prefer direct action based on strong desire, this aspect with Neptune indicates an uncertainty about the best way to proceed, and even a lack of clarity about what we truly want. We can have trouble asserting ourselves because the ego self is a bit at sea.

The danger of this aspect is that we will act from a place of self-sacrifice, out of a belief that we can "rescue" someone, or due to a lack of strong boundaries. In the positive, this aspect can show us where we are still lacking the confidence to take direct action due to a need for appreciation or approval.

AT THE TIME of the Full Moon, which perfects on Thursday, June 24, at 11:39 a.m. PDT, the Moon will be at 03°27´ Capricorn, with the Sun at the same degree of Cancer. The primary aspect to Luna at the time of the event is a sextile to Jupiter in Pisces. This subtle but helpful aspect can increase our sense of optimism, inspire a belief in spiritual solutions, and enhance our intuitive knowing of what steps to take next.

The Omega/Chandra symbols for the fourth degree of Capricorn provide more insights into the meanings of this Full Moon. Here are the symbols and interpretations from astrologer John Sandbach:

Omega symbol: “As a cliff erodes, a temple is in danger of collapsing.” Needs change, and when they do, structures that we have depended on for a long time need to change too, to meet those new needs. This degree helps us tap into undercurrents of feeling and see how these are eroding the landscape of human thought. At its best, it’s capable of suggesting a means of change that take into account long range, practical goals.

Chandra symbol: “Footprints in the snow.” A psychic awareness of energy traces that have been left both in this life and other lifetimes. There is the persistent feeling, always in the back of our minds, that all this has happened before. This feeling is present so that hopefully we may gain more awareness of why things are unfolding the way they are, and this time either work through them or overcome them, so they can be let go of, clearing the way for further growth.

AS THE PLANETARY RULER of Capricorn, Saturn is also the lord of this week’s Full Moon. This means that Saturn's current condition has important impact on events related to the lunation. The Saturn-Uranus square was exact only last week, so the Ringed Planet is still strongly engaged in that challenging energy.

With this week's Full Moon, we may indeed see "a cliff eroding" (Uranus in Taurus) that was the foundation (Saturn) for a "temple" of some description. This is most likely a symbolic temple, a belief system that until now has sustained us in some way.

The ultimate test of any Full Moon is one of balance. This week, we are called to be strong and resilient, with a focus on the long-term goal (Moon in Capricorn), while also being present emotionally, having empathy for others, and taking the time for self-nurturing (Sun in Cancer).

IF YOUR BIRTHDAY IS THIS WEEK: This year, there are many opportunities to expand your spiritual or creative world, if you are willing to take a few risks. Enthusiasm and confidence are heightened, as well as your intuitive knowing of how to proceed. As you step out into the unknown, you are buoyed by an optimism and faith that sustains you. You may also find yourself feeling especially generous, eager to give of yourself to support others who are in need. (Solar Return Sun trine Jupiter)
