InnerSelf Newsletter: December 21st, 2014

December 21st, 2014

Welcome... Our InnerSelf welcomes your Inner Self.

Sometimes we might feel like our life is a tangled mess... that our emotions are all tangled up and we don't see the way out. This is usually when we are feeling like "it's all too much". Don Joseph Goewey, author of The End of Stress, has some suggestions for When Your To Do List Overwhelms You and Threatens Your Well-Being. And then there are those days when we seem lost and headed down The Road from Joy to Depression. This is when our "stuff" starts coming up and we come face to face with our Fear of Aging (among other things).

Yet these dark times are also when we start understanding The Whats and Whys of Expectation Hangovers, This is when the rebel within us wakes up and we discover that Being Happy is a Revolutionary Act. This is followed by the revelation (which is in itself a revolution) that Appreciation & Being of Service Contribute To An Evolutionary Shift. There is hope at the end of the tunnel, and you are that hope. You are the light at the end of your own tunnel of darkness, despair, and disappointments.

This is the journey we travel this week with our featured articles: the journey from confusion to clarity, from darkness to light...

We also take a look at extroverts and their enhanced immune system; how mindfulness can give you the gift of a calmer Christmas; what major cities are ready for climate change; common misconceptions about the flu; the humanitarian values of Pope Francis; and much more.

When Your To Do List Overwhelms You and Threatens Your Well-Being

When Your To Do List Overwhelms You and Threatens Your Well-Beingby Don Joseph Goewey.

We only get a 10 percent lift if we transition from poor to rich, or move from a smaller to a bigger house, or get promoted, or even find our soul mate. On the other hand, 40 percent of our happiness rises or falls depending, on the quality of our mental state.

The Road from Joy to Depression: How Do I Choose Differently?

How Could I Choose Differently?by Jennice Vilhauer, PhD.

Feelings are very much like the indicator lights on the dashboard of your car — if you are out of gas, the low-fuel light will turn on. If you are focusing on something unwanted, a negative feeling will show up. Your emotional state indicates what you are giving attention to, even if you are not aware of it.

My Love of Solitude and My Fear of Aging

My Love of Solitude and My Fear of Agingby Barry Vissell.

Sometimes Joyce and I laugh about the possibility of our future grown-up grandchildren being paid by our children to accompany me on a river trip... Then one of my grandchildren will approach me and enthusiastically ask, “Grandpa, can I please go with you on your next river trip?”

Being Happy is a Revolutionary Act

Being Happy is a Revolutionary Actby Pam Grout.

One of the most radical things a person can do is to see life as a good time. To make a decision to be happy. But make no mistake. Living life with joie de vivre is a revolutionary act. It takes vigilance. Few of us believe we get to choose. We think it's a matter of fate, a roll of the dice.

The Whats and Whys of Expectation Hangovers

The Whats and Whys of Expectation Hangoversby Christine Hassler.

We are all consumers of expectations. They are easy to come by — from parents, family, friends, the media — and many are self-created. Expectations are pervasive in our lives, and most of us are conditioned to be driven by them and to attempt to realize them. Our expectations then become our compass...

Appreciation & Being of Service Contribute To An Evolutionary Shift

Appreciation & Being of Service Contributes To An Evolutionary Shiftby Marlise Karlin.

When we recognize the impact we have, purely by being responsible for our state of mind – and how that affects the electromagnetic field that surrounds us, we realize that every moment sets in motion an incremental modification of such import that its trajectory could create a global shift in consciousness.
